day hike!
🌊 zippel bay state park!
when i was little, my family would take fishing trips up in minnesota’s “northwest angle”, that little bump into canada at the top of the state. it’s been many years since i’ve seen the massive lake of the woods, and it’s still as beautiful as ever!
zippel bay state park’s sandy shore provides lovely access to lake of the woods, and the surrounding grounds are full of cool critters like frogs & snakes. in addition to hiking trails, there are equine trails and a marina for boating excursions.
as blue as the lake’s waters were the blueberry pretzels that southern minnesota guy bought at the ronnings general store in baudette for our snack break. yum!
zippel bay is located in lake of the woods county, minnesota — home to indigenous speakers of the Southern Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe), Dakȟóta (Western Dakota), Dakhóta (Eastern Dakota), Lakȟótiyapi (Lakota), and Saulteaux languages.

my trail name’s mythic and in 2026 i continued my multi-year thru-hike (m.y.t.h.) of the pacific crest trail. as i plan my 2027 return to the pct, i'm going on day hikes & bikes to help keep in trail shape!
