gear shakedown!

⚙️ is my hiking gear pct-ready?

i go on plenty of day hikes back home in minnesota (and other cool places my travels take me) so i’m no stranger to prepping a backpack. but getting ready for the pacific crest trail, even for just a few weeks as i will be this year to make up for miles i had to skip in 2025, is a completely different animal!

‍you may have heard of “the 10 essentials” of hiking: navigation, sun protection, first aid, illumination, fire, repair tools, shelter, plus extra food, water, and clothes. (the exact wording will vary depending where you look.) accounting for them all is a good idea anytime, but will be absolutely critical during my 12-day stretch in the eastern sierra.

in this video i step through everything crammed into my backpack (and onto my person), plus set up my tent to make sure i still remember how to do it. please let me know if you have any questions about what i’m packing for the pct, or want to share your own must-carry gear!

my trail name’s mythic and in 2026 i’m continuing my multi-year thru-hike (m.y.t.h.) of the pacific crest trail. as i prepare to return to the pct (and hopefully tackle other section- and thru-hikes in the future), i'm going on day hikes to help keep in trail shape!
