snowshoeing!
❄️ mille lacs kathio state park!
after a “trail lunch” back at the cabin, we strapped on our snowshoes and spent the afternoon of february 21st wandering the woods of mille lacs kathio state park in mille lacs county, minnesota — traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ ↗, Bdewakantuwan (Mdewakanton), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ nations.
the glacial ridge trail hike was lots of fun, but the most thrilling event of the day occurred off-camera. a panicked southern minnesota guy announced he’d lost his car keys! we backtracked to several places we’d been but came up empty, and he became resigned to the fact that his keys must be buried in a snowdrift somewhere within the park’s 20-square-mile boundary. returning to our cabin and wearily removing his snow pants, sominnguy heard a jangle/thud on the wooden floor — his keys had been hiding in the elastic cuff of his pants the whole time!
this was the 4th of 6 mini-adventures during a super-fun, late-february, winter weekend getaway for me and southern minnesota guy. it was chock full of micro-spike hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, state park cabin sleeping, basic camp cooking, and amazing restaurant food. stay tuned for part 5, coming soon!
my trail name’s mythic and in 2026 i’m continuing my multi-year thru-hike (m.y.t.h.) of the pacific crest trail. as i prepare to return to the pct (and hopefully tackle other section- and thru-hikes in the future), i'm going on day hikes to help keep in trail shape!
